Das Ziel von Untersuchungen zum Biomonitoring besteht darin, über Stoffkonzentrationen in Organismen Hinweise auf die unterschiedliche bioverfügbare Belastung der Umwelt zu bekommen. Voraussetzung ist aber ein Verständnis der Akkumulationsstrategie und eine Kalibrierung entsprechender Organismen sowie ein adäquates experimentelles Design der Probenahme. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden erste Ergebnisse üner Schwermetalle (Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn und Hg) in 8 ausgewählten Tierarten der Bodenfauna präsentiert. Berücksichtigt wurden Herzmuscheln (Cerastoderma edule), Miesmuscheln (Mytilus edulis), Tellmuschel (Macoma baltica) sowie die Polychaeten Nephtys hombergii / N. cirrosa, Arenicola marina, Nereis devisicolor und Scolelepis squamata. Das Material wurde teils in Dauerstationen des NLÖ-Forschungsstelle Küste im Watt bei Norderney gewonnen, teils an zusätzlichen Stationen am seeseitigen Strand der Insel. Die Eignung der Organismen wurde in orientierenden Experimenten zur Toxicokinetik der betrachteten Elemente getestet. Wegen beobachteter Tendenzen zur Nettoakkumulierung sind sowohl Herzmuscheln (C. edule) als auch Miesmuscheln, (M. edulis) zumindest mit Einschränkung, für ein Biomonitoring geeignet. Lediglich Zn muss für die Miesmuscheln als reguliert angesehen werden. Bei den Polychaeten deuten die Ergebnisse darauf hin, dass N hombergii / N. cirrosa und, mit Einschränkungen, A. marina hinsichtlich aller betrachteten Elemente für ein Biomonitoring geeignet sind. Aus dem Vergleich mit Literaturdaten ergeben sich keine Hinweise auf eine erhöhte Metallverfügbarkeit für unterschiedliche Untersuchungskollektive an den beiden Standorten Norderneys. Within the concept of biomonitoring, chemical concentration levels in organisms are regarded as indicators of the bioavailable fraction of substances in the environment. Knowledge of corresponding accumulation strategies, calibration of biomonitors and an adequate experimental design are important preconditions for this concept. In this paper we report preliminary results of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn and Hg) in 8 selected macrobenthic species, including the Common Cockle (Cerastoderma edule), the Common Mussel (Mytilus edulis) and the Baltic Tellin (Macoma baltica) as well as the polychaetes Nephtys hombergii / N. cirrosa, Arenicola marina, Nereis devisicolor and Scolelepis squamata. Samples were partly taken from long-term stations of NLÖ-Forschungsstelle Küste in the Wadden Sea at Norderney, partly from additional stations at the exposed sandy beach of the island. First experiments on the metal toxicokinetics provide some indication on the suitability of the organisms tested for biomonitoring. The Common Cockle, C. edule, as well as the Common Mussel, M. edulis, may be used as biomonitiors, according to observed net accumulation for most elements tested. Only Zn seems to be regulated in mussels. Results for polychaetes indicate that collectives of N. hombergii / N. cirrosa and A. marina may be used as biomonitors for all elements tested, at least at first aproximation In comparision to literature data, metal availabilities in different collections from both localities of the island of Norderney seem to be not elevated.
