Der Geologische Dienst SH beschäftigt sich mit den Möglichkeiten zur geothermischen Nutzung des tiefen und oberflächennahen Untergrundes. Die Karten dieses Dienstes zeigen Potenzialgebiete für die hydrothermale Nutzung von Sandsteinhorizonten (Rhät-, Dogger- und Mittlerer Sandstein), die Wärmeleitfähigkeiten des oberflächennahen Untergrundes bis 100 m Tiefe sowie die Eignung des Bodens für die Errichtung von Erdwärmekollektoren.
