Bericht: "Makrozoobenthos: Schwermetalle in Muscheln und Borstenwürmern – Norderney (1991/1992)"

In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden erste Ergebnisse über Schwermetalle (Pb, Cd, Cu und Zn) in 8 ausgewählten Tierarten der Bodenfauna (Cerastoderma edule, Mytilus edulis, Macoma balthica, Nephtys hombergii, Nephtys cirrosa, Arenicola marina, Nereis diversicolor und Scolelepis squamata) präsentiert. Das Ziel dieser Untersuchung zum Biomonitoring besteht darin, über Stoffkonzentrationen in Organismen Hinweise auf die unterschiedliche bioverfügbare Belastung der Umwelt zu bekommen. Das Material wurde teils im Watt bei Norderney, teils am seeseitigen Strand der Insel gewonnen. In this paper we report preliminary results of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn) in 8 selected macrobenthic species (Cerastoderma edule, Mytilus edulis, Macoma balthica, Nephtys hombergii, Nephtys cirrosa, Arenicola marina, Nereis diversicolor und Scolelepis squamata). Within the concept of biomonitoring, chemical concentration levels in organisms are regarded as indicators of the bioavailable fraction of substances in the environment. Samples were partly taken in the wadden-sea of Norderney, partly at the exposed sandy beach of the island.

Bericht: "Schwermetalle Wesermündung (1985-1992)"

Sedimente von 7 Terminstationen sowie Zoobenthos- (Corophium volutator, Hediste diversicolor, Oligochaeta) und Vegetationsproben (Phragmites australis) von 2 Terminstationen im Eulitoral der Wesermündung werden seit 1985 zweimal jährlich auf die Anreicherung von verschiedenen Schwermetallen untersucht. Das Programm begann mit der Analyse von Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Hg und Zn. Seit 1987 wurden zusätzlich die Konzentrationen von Fe, Mn, Ti und V bestimmt. Die Untersuchungen sind Teil der Überwachung von Abwassereinleitungen aus dem Titandioxidproduktion eines Werkes bei Nordenham und basieren auf der „EG-Richtlinie 82/883/EWG über die Einzelheiten der Überwachung und Kontrolle der durch die Ableitungen aus der Titanoxidproduktion betroffenen Umweltmedien“. The concentrations of heavy metals were biannually determined in the intertidal sediments, macrozoobenthos (Corophium volutator, Hediste diversicolor, Oligochaeta) and vegetation (Phragmites australis) form the Weser estuary during 1985-1992. The programme started with the analyzing of Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Hg, and Zn. From 1987 on the concentrations of Fe, Mn, Ti, and V were additionally determined. The assessments are part of the surveys of the impact of the outfall from a titanium dioxide plant on the estuarine environment. They base on the Council directive 82/883/EEC December 1982. The results are discussed in reference to the geochemical background (sediment) and data from recent literature.

Bericht: "Makrozoobenthos: Rekrutierungsdynamik in eulitoralen Weichböden: Larvenangebot, Ansiedlung, Dispersion – Nordsee (2003)"

„Innerhalb der Frage, welche Prozesse und Faktoren die Verteilung und Abundanz von marinen Arten bestimmen, hat Rekrutierung einen immer größeren Stellenwert als strukturierender Prozess gewonnen. Rekrutierung selber ist komplex und hängt von einer Vielzahl von Faktoren vor und nach der Larvenansiedlung ab. Das Hauptziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war die Klärung der Frage, wie die Prozesse Larvenangebot, Larvenansiedlung und sekundäre Dispersion die Rekrutierung des Makrozoobenthos in eulitoralen Weichboden-Gemeinschaften der Nordsee beeinflussen. Der strenge Winter 1995/96 wurde als natürliches Großexperiment genutzt, um den Einfluss dieser Prozesse auf die Wiederbesiedlung und die Ausbildung von zwei unterschiedlichen Gemeinschaftsstrukturen zu dokumentieren. […]“ Recruitment dynamics of North Sea macrozoobenthos in intertidal soft bottoms: larval availability, settlement and dispersal. “One of the most fundamental challenges in ecology is to understand the underlying causes of patterns in distribution and abundance of species. As ecologists have grappeled with this question, the role of recruitment as a structuring process has attracted increasing attention over the last two decades. Much of the recent work has focused on how pre- and post settlement processes involved into recruitment affect the temporal and spatial pattern of invertebrate populations and communities. This thesis investigates how larval supply, larval settlement and secondary dispersal in relation to environmental conditions affected recruitment of macrozoobenthos living in an intertidal sand flat located in the German Wadden Sea (North Sea). The severe winter 1995(96 was used as a natural large-scale experiment to study how these processes contribute to the recovery from such a disturbance and to asses the structural development of two different assemblages. Bericht: "Makrozoobenthos: Wesermündung (1982)"

Four years of monitoring were carried out on intertidal sedimente and bottom fauna in the Weser estuary around Nordenham, where since 1969.large amounts (c. 20 000 to 30 000 m3 /day) of waste water from a Titaniumdioxide factory are discharged. The main constituents are H2SO4 and FeS04, the pH-value is between 2 and 2.5. The results could be compared with a base-line study from the time before the beginning of the discharge. The main results, summarized as annual mean values of the. parameters investigated quantitatively, are given in table 8. The main characteristics of the area investigated are salinities low in average but widely fluctuating, highly turbid water, very soft muddy sediments containing high amounts of clay, organic matter and several chemical compounds, and the presence of a largely impoverished bottom fauna. From the 26 species occurring 16 are of marine and four of limnic origin, the remaining six are indigenous brackish water species. According to the instable environment, species combination changed continuously, particularly dependant on river discharge and changing salinity. A particular interest was attached to the development of iron content in the deposite during the discharge of iron-acid wastes. There was a certain rise in several years which, however, was not continuous. With regard to the ecological effects it was concluded, that drastic changes in species diversity and total biomass have not occurred, while total abundance has declined close to the waste water outlet but in certain other areas has increased. Concerning species combination, it became evident that one species which had been abundant before the beginning of the discharge, the brackish water crustacean Neomysis. integer, has disappeared.

„In die Wesermündung werden seit 1969 Abwässer aus einer Titandioxidfabrik eingeleitet. Im Rahmen eines Überwachungsprogrammes wurden die langfristigen Veränderungen des eulitoralen Benthos im mesohalinen Abschnitt des Ästuars anhand von Kartierungsdaten der Jahre 1968, 1980 und 1992 untersucht. Mit Hilfe von Clusteranalysen konnten acht Benthos-Assoziationen definiert und beschrieben werden, deren Anzahl sich von 1968 (7) bis 1992 (3) verringerte. Dieser Verlust an Vielfalt von Gemeinschaften dürfte auf einen Verlust an Umweltqualität hindeuten, ohne dass die direkten Ursachen genannt werden könnten. Parallel dazu hatten sich Verbreitungsareale vieler Arten wie auch der gesamten Benthosbiozönose stromaufwärts verlagert, was auf den langfristigen Anstieg der Salinität zurückzuführen ist. Als besonders auffällige Veränderungen sind zu nennen: 1) ein starker Rückgang der Brackwasseralge Vaucheria sp., nachweislich nicht durch Abwässer aus der TiO2-Produktion verursacht, und 2) eine Etablierung des Polychaeten Marenzelleria c.f. wireni seit 1986, der im Laufe der 80er Jahre in viele Ästuare der südlichen Nordsee eingewandert ist.“ “Since 1969, the Weser estuary is recipient of waste water from a titanium-dioxide factory.
